CBDT Extends Audit Date, and also its Ego. A story of Extension without Respect

CBDT Extends Audit Date, Not Its Sense of Humor. The much-awaited CBDT Press Release of 25th September 2025 has finally arrived – like a train that comes late but insists that “I was on time, it’s just you who checked the wrong clock.”

Yes, the Tax Audit Due Date for Assessment Year 2025–26 has been extended from 30th September 2025 to 31st October 2025.

But wait – before you jump with joy, let’s decode the fine print.

What CBDT Wants Us to Believe

In the third paragraph of the Press Release, the Board proudly clarifies that:

The portal is smooth.

The system is stable.

Tax Audit Reports (TARs) are being uploaded without glitches.

In short, CBDT says: “Hamari ladli Infosys ki website ekdum masti mein hai, agar koi problem hai toh woh tumhari efficiency ki hai, dear professionals!”

Really? This is like a restaurant saying “Our kitchen is perfect, the food is great, but if you got stomach ache, blame your digestion.”

The Reality Check

On one hand, High Courts (like Rajasthan HC) have openly acknowledged portal glitches and practical hardships. On the other hand, CBDT’s press release sounds like a proud parent defending its stubborn child:

“Portal kabhi galti nahi karta.”

“Aap CA log hi efficient nahi ho.”

“Waise bhi, hum toh extension dena hi nahi chahte the. Court aur aapki roohani faryad ki wajah se majboori mein de rahe hai.”

This is like extending a deadline grudgingly and then announcing, “But mind you, we didn’t want to. You forced us.”

The WhatsApp Wisdom

Some WhatsApp group comments summed it up brilliantly:

1.  CBDT has basically told us – “Humare portal mein koi problem nahi, tumhari working mein problem hai.”

2.  The extension was not due to glitches but only because “aapne bola aur Court ne zor dala.”

3.  Infy’s portal is their “laadli beti” – untouchable, unquestionable, and ever perfect. Khud Bhagwan bhi bole ki “portal down hai,” toh bhi CBDT bolega, “Shayad aapke Wi-Fi mein problem hai.”

What About ITR Filing Date?

Here comes the catch.

Audit Report Due Date: Extended to 31st October 2025.

ITR Filing Due Date: As of now, no extension beyond 31st October 2025 has been announced.

So, dear taxpayers, you may have an extra month for audit reports, but unless CBDT wakes up again, the ITR filing deadline remains where it is.

Final Thoughts

This Press Release should win an award – not for clarity, not for taxpayer-friendliness, but for comedy writing.

It’s rare to see a government body say with a straight face:

“Portal mast hai.”

“Professionals slow hain.”

“Court bola toh hi extension diya.”

At this rate, next year we might see CBDT declaring:

“Portal ki kasam, sab sahi hai. Agar nahi hai, toh aapko lagta hai ki sahi nahi hai. Samjhe ya samjhau?”

Till then, let’s celebrate the extension – grudging as it may be – and pray that someday CBDT will realize that acknowledging taxpayers’ pain is as important as granting extensions.

Not Just About Dates, But About Dignity

Yes, the audit date has been extended, but the bigger issue is the insult to taxpayers and professionals. By claiming the portal is flawless, CBDT has brushed aside the genuine hardships faced by lakhs of users – hardships which even the Hon’ble High Courts have recognized.

That’s why, all those who have filed Writ Petitions must not withdraw them just because the date is extended. These cases must continue, if not for the extension, then for the dignity of taxpayers and professionals who were mocked by the “no glitches” statement.

Moreover, the Prime Minister’s Office must intervene. The bureaucracy’s denial of ground realities is damaging the government’s credibility. In the very year when the nation was looking forward to GST 2.0 and the much-publicized 12 lakh benefit impact, CBDT’s insensitive handling of such a crucial matter has cast a shadow.

What was supposed to be a reform-oriented, taxpayer-friendly government move has been reduced to another example of bad governance and poor administration.

If CBDT truly wants to win hearts, it must remember: taxpayers need empathy, not excuses.

So yes, only the audit date is extended, not the ITR date. That mockery is for us to continue writing about!  CBDT has said – Portal Perfect, Professionals Defective

Undeniably, Extension Mil Gayi, Respect Nahi.

In short, Extension is CBDT’s Love Letter to Infosys: Hamari Ladli Kabhi Glitch Nahi Karti.

Now, Audit Date Extended, ITR Deadline Still Doing Yoga at 31st October”
