Permanent Account Number (PAN) is a ten digit alphanumeric number, issued in the form of laminated card, by the Income Tax Department, to any “person” who applies for it or to whom the department allots the number without an application.

PAN facilitates linking of various documents, including payment of taxes, tax demand, tax arrears etc. relating to an assessee, to facilitate easy retrieval of information and to facilitate matching of information relating to investment, raising of loans and other business activity of taxpayers collected through various sources, both internal as well as external, for detecting and combating tax evasion and widening of tax base.

PAN application can now be made online on NSDL website or UTIITSL website

Fill the applicant information such as Full name, Date of birth, Email ID, Mobile number and then ‘SUBMIT’ the form.

Step 2 – Mode of Payment

PAN application charges is Rs 107 for Indian communication address and 994 foreign communication address. Mode to pay the amount is through debit / credit card, demand draft or net banking. After successful payment , acknowledgement will be displayed. Acknowledgement number should be saved for future reference.

Step 3 – Documents

After submitting the documents, supporting documents are required to be sent through courier / post to NSDL. On receipt of application,  PAN application would be processed. Documents required –

  • proof of identity
  • proof of address
  • proof of date of birth

Above documents are to be sent to NSDL by post within 15 days of submitting the online application. PAN will be sent to the address within 15 working days.

 

 

 

FAQs on PAN

  • Can PAN card application be procured by handwritten application on plain paper?
    • No, it’s not possible to apply for PAN card through a handwritten application. The application is only accepted in the format notified by the Central Board of Direct Taxes. The forms pertaining the same are:
      • For Indian Citizen, Form 49A
      • For Foreign Citizen, Form 49AA
  • Where should the PAN Card application form be submitted?
    • Where PAN card application is submitted online, take printout of the application form, sign and affix a recent photograph. Then send this form along with supporting documentation to the address below

  • Is it necessary to include father’s name in the application form for a female who is married/widow/divorced?
    • All female applicants should include only their father’s name in the PAN application form, irrespective of their marital status. The form does not need to be updated with the husband’s name.
  • Is it compulsory to mention email ID or telephone number on the form?
    • It is mandatory for all applicants to provide either their email ID or telephone number in the PAN application form, so that they can be contacted in the event of a discrepancy. It is also useful when the applicant receives the PAN through email.
  • How to check the status of PAN Card application?
    • To check the status of PAN application, visit NSDL-TIN website and click on the ‘StatusTrack’ menu option. Provide acknowledgement number to get the status. It can be checked only after 3 days from the date of application.
  • To check status through SMS, type ‘NSDLPAN’ followed by acknowledgement number. This message should be sent to 57575 to receive the application status.
