Online PAN Applications: Steps, Documents, Do & Don’t

STEPS FOR ONLINE APPLICATION

  1. Only Indian citizens should use this form for submitting application for allotment of PAN. Indian citizens located outside India should also use this form.
  2. Applicant will initially register by selecting Form 49A along with category and title of the applicant and enter the required details and submit. A token number will be generated and displayed to the applicant before filling the form. This token number would also be sent on e-mail ID (provided in the application form) for reference purpose. There is a facility to save the details entered in the application form such that this data can be viewed and edited by the applicant prior to its final submission by using this temporary token number.
  3. Applicant can select any one of the four options while filling online PAN application
  4. If the data submitted fails in any format level validation, a response indicating the error(s) will be displayed on the screen. The applicant shall rectify the error(s) and re-submit the form.
  5. If there are no format level error(s), a confirmation screen with data filled by the applicant will be displayed.
  6. The applicant may either edit or confirm the same.

2. PAYMENT

  1. If Physical PAN Card is required:
    While submitting PAN application form, applicant will have to indicate whether physical PAN card is required. If applicant opts for physical PAN Card, then physical PAN card will be printed & dispatched at communication address. The e-PAN card in PDF format will be dispatched at e-mail ID mentioned in PAN application form, if the same is provided. Fees applicable are as follows:-

  1. If Physical PAN Card is not required:
    PAN applicant will have to indicate at the time of submission of PAN application, if the physical PAN Card is not required. In such cases, email ID will be mandatory & e-PAN Card will be sent to the PAN applicant at the email ID. Physical PAN Card will not be dispatched in such cases. Fees applicable are as follows:-

  1. While filling online form if any of addresses i.e., office address or residential address is a foreign address, the payment can be made through credit card/debit card/Net banking / Demand Draft payable at Mumbai (drawn in favour of ‘NSDL – PAN). At present this facility is available for a select list of countries. Applicants from other countries may contact NSDL e-Gov at the contact details given in point (5) below.
  2. However, if online application is made through e-KYC & e-Sign paperless application/ e-Sign scanned based/ DSC scanned based option (i.e., other than physical mode), then the payment can be made only through Credit Card/Debit Card or Net banking.
  3. Name of the applicant and the acknowledgment number should be mentioned on the reverse of the demand draft.
  4. Credit card / Debit card / Net banking payment – Persons authorised to make Credit card / Debit card / Net banking payment are as below:

On successful credit card / debit card / net banking payment, acknowledgment will be displayed. Applicant shall save and print the acknowledgment and send it to NSDL as mentioned in point ‘u – Mode of Submission of Documents’ below.

  1. To regenerate acknowledgement receipt, please click here(Application made from July 16, 2016 onwards) or here (Application made on or before July 15, 2016) and fill details accordingly.

3. ACKNOWLEDGMENT

  1. On confirmation, and in case of credit card / debit card / net banking payment (on successful payment), an acknowledgment screen with downloadable acknowledgement receipt will be displayed. An e-mail containing this acknowledgement receipt (in PDF) as well as payment receipt (in PDF) as attachments will be sent to applicant’s e-mail ID mentioned in the application.
  2. Applicant shall save and print this acknowledgment.
  3. ‘Individual’ applicants making “Application for allotment of new PAN” should affix two recent colour photographs (3.5 cm x 2.5 cm) in the space provided in the acknowledgment. The photograph should not be stapled or clipped to the acknowledgment. (The clarity of the image on PAN card will depend on the quality and clarity of the photograph affixed on the form).
  4. Signature / Left hand thumb impression should be provided across the photo affixed on the left side of the acknowledgement in such a manner that portion of signature/impression is on photo as well as on acknowledgement receipt.
  5. The signature/ left thumb impression SHOULD NOT BE ON THE PHOTOGRAPH affixed on right side of the acknowledgement. If there is any mark on this photograph such that it hinders the clear visibility of the face of the applicant, the application may not be processed.
  6. Signature / left thumb impression should only be within the box provided in the acknowledgment. In case of non-individual PAN applicants, the acknowledgement receipt shall be signed by the authorized signatory (Karta in case of HUF, Director in case of Company, Partner in case of Partnership Firm / LLP, Trustee in case of Trust and Authorized signatory in remaining categories). In case of PAN applications from non-individuals, Seal and/or Stamp is not required on PAN application Form 49A.
  7. Thumb impression, if used, should be attested by a Magistrate or a Notary Public or Gazetted Officer, under official seal and stamp.

4. MODE OF SUBMISSION OF DOCUMENTS

  1. If Physical mode of submission is selected in Online PAN application then the acknowledgment duly signed, affixed with photographs (in case of ‘Individuals’) along with demand draft, if any, and proof of identity, proof of address and proof of date of birth (applicable for Individuals & Karta of HUF) needs to be sent to NSDL e-Gov at ‘Income Tax PAN Services Unit, NSDL e-Governance Infrastructure Limited, 5th Floor, Mantri Sterling, Plot No. 341, Survey No. 997/8, Model Colony, Near Deep Bungalow Chowk, Pune – 411 016’.

For e-KYC & e-Sign, e-Sign based or DSC based online PAN application, there is no need to send physical documents to NSDL e-Gov as all these are paperless mode of PAN application.

  1. It is mandatory to quote Aadhaar /Enrolment ID of Aadhaar application form, for making an application for allotment of Permanent Account Number (Form 49A) and copy of Aadhaar allotment letter / Copy of Enrolment ID receipt of Aadhaar application form should also be enclosed along with the acknowledgement.
  2. Superscribe the envelope with ‘APPLICATION FOR PAN — N-15 digit Acknowledgement Number’ (e.g. ‘APPLICATION FOR PAN — N-881010200000097’).
  3. Your acknowledgment, demand draft, if any, and proofs, should reach NSDL within 15 days from the date of online application.
  4. Applications received with demand draft as mode of payment shall be processed only on receipt of relevant proofs and realisation of payment.
  5. Applications received with credit card / debit card / net banking as mode of payment shall be processed on receipt of relevant documents (acknowledgment and proofs).

DOCUMENTS TO BE SUMITTED FOR PAN:

For Individuals & HUF

  • Individual applicants should provide proof of residential address.
  • If the applicant is a minor (i.e. below 18 years of age at the time of application), any of the documents as per the lists specified below of any of the parents/ guardian of such minor shall be deemed to be the proof of identity and address of the applicant.

h. Pensioner card having photograph of the applicant; or h. Domicile certificate issued by the Government; or h. Domicile certificate issued by the Government; or
i. Central Government Health Scheme Card or Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme photo card i. (a) Electricity Bill; or
(b) Landline Telephone or Broadband connection bill; or
(c) Water Bill; or
(d) Consumer gas connection card or book or piped gas bill; or
(e) Bank account statement or as per Note 2 ; or

(g) Credit card statement; or
k. Marriage certificate issued by the Registrar of Marriages; or
l. Affidavit sworn before a magistrate stating the date of birth.
(iii) Bank certificate in Original on letter head from the branch(alongwith name and stamp of the issuing officer) containing duly attested photograph and bank account number of the applicant (iii) Certificate of address signed by a Member of Parliament or Member of Legislative Assembly or Municipal Councilor or a Gazetted officer
(iv) Employer certificate in original
Note: Note:
1. In case of Minor, any of the above mentioned documents as proof of identity and address of any of parents/guardians of such minor shall be deemed to be the proof of identity and address for the minor applicant. 1. Proof of Address is required for residence address mentioned in item no. 7.
2. For HUF, an affidavit made by the Karta of Hindu Undivided Family stating name, father’s name and address of all the coparceners on the date of application and copy of any of the above documents in the name of Karta of HUF is required is required as proof of identity, address and date of birth. 2. In case of an Indian citizen residing outside India, copy of Bank Account Statement in country of residence or copy of Non-resident External (NRE) bank account statements (not more than three months old) shall be the proof of address.

For Categories other than Individuals & HUF i.e. Firm, BOI, AOP, AOP (Trust), Local Authority, Company, Limited Liability Partnership,Artificial Juridical Person

List of documents which are acceptable as proof of identity and address for applicants other than individual and HUF is as below:

(1.2) Copy of registration certificate issued in India or of approval granted to set up office in India by Indian Authorities.

Do & DON’T WHILE MAKING PAN APPLICATION

Important information for persons making application for allotment of PAN (Form 49A)

Do’s

  • Do use ‘Form 49A’for making application for allotment of PAN.
  • Do fill the application in block letters in English and preferably with black ink.
  • Do paste two recent colour photographs (size 3.5 cm X 2.5 cm).
  • Do provide the signature within the box.
  • If thumb impression is put on the application form, do get the thumb impression attested by Magistrate or a Notary Public or a Gazetted Officer, under official seal and stamp.
  • Do provide correct AO code in the application.
  • Do specify AO code as below if applicant is a defence employee

Air Force – DEL W 72 2

  • Do attach Proof of Identity (POI), Proof of Address (POA) and Proof of Date of Birth (PODB – for Individual & HUF) as per Rule 114 (4) of Income Tax Rules, 1962.
  • Do provide the POI, POA and PODB which have name exactly as written in the application.
  • Do provide details of Representative Assessee in column 14 of application form, if applicant is Minor, Idiot, Lunatic or Deceased.
  • Do provide POI and POA for Representative Assessee also, if Representative Assessee is appointed.
  • Do write the complete postal address in the application with landmark.
  • Do mention correct pin code in the address field.
  • Do mention telephone number / e- mail id in the application.

Don’ts

  • Do not overwrite or make corrections in the application.
  • Do not pin or staple the photograph.
  • Do not sign across the box (i.e. signature should be within the box)
  • Do not provide POI and POA which are not in the name of the applicant.
  • Do not write any additional details (date, designation, rank, etc.) along with the signature in the box.
  • Do not mention Husband’s name in the Father’s Name column.
  • Do not abbreviate your name or do not use initials.
  • Do not apply for a new PAN if you already have one.
